I am lucky that I no longer have to travel by train very often but when I did I was delayed almost every day. It seems things are not getting any better with Network Rail admitting its trains-on-time targets won’t be met until the end of the decade. With train punctuality at its lowest level in two years but fares steadily rising you do wonder where they are going wrong. I often find myself pricing the same journey by car and by train and coming to the conclusion now, that I would rather drive and know I will get to my destination with a seat and on time and often much more cheaply. Even five years ago the train would often come in cheaper and would have been my preferred choice as I could catch up on some work en-route. I wonder how many other people are coming to the conclusion that train travel is no longer simply worth the expense and often the extra hassle.
