Slightly more adventurous diners might be interested to see that one of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s restaurants in Devon has recently started serving squirrel. Whilst I have read of other restaurants putting squirrel on the menu it doesn’t yet seem to be a popular choice. The River Cottage Canteen in Plymouth has been serving it braised in a tomato and red wine sauce. The meat which has been likened to rabbit seems a logical choice for the menu when you consider the amount of grey squirrels that are culled each year. I wonder where I can try some near to me, or perhaps I need to take my shotgun out in the garden .
