Having lived in Sevenoaks for most of my life I have been following this story with interest. It was finally announced yesterday that Sevenoaks will get a new grammar school. It will be the first new grammar school in Britain in 50 years, something which has caused a great deal of controversy and has been hailed as a backwards step by some.
Looking at the story purely from a local perspective Sevenoaks has needed a grammar school for some time. Children locally who are lucky enough to pass the eleven plus and get into a grammar school, currently do not have a local option. The only available schools are in Tunbridge Wells or Tonbridge, a 30 minute bus ride ride away in rush hour traffic. The new school, in my opinion will fill a much needed void, although it will initially be a girls school only, it will be widely welcome by Sevenoaks parents. I would hope by the time my children start to local at secondary schools it will have expanded to offer places to both and girls and boys. There is no much pressure on school places in Sevenoaks, that the opening of a new school can only be a good thing.
