A rubber chicken called Camilla has been sent into space in an experiment carried out by students in California. The chicken kitted out in a space suit was attached to a helium balloon and managed to reach an altitude of 40km (25 miles). The chicken wore a pair of badges to test levels of radiation and her spacecraft was a modified lunchbox containing four cameras, a cryogenic thermometer and two GPS trackers. The chicken flew twice to give the students the chance to make comparisons of radiation levels. After a couple of hours in the sky the balloon popped and Camilla was parachuted back to earth.
