On reading my copy of Gardeners World I came across an interesting article by Monty Don on what gardening tasks need doing in March. It has already occurred to me that I need to get outside and make a start but this has given me a gentle reminder. The first thing he suggests is to prepare your soil ahead of the planting season which will soon be upon us. For us this means digging out the weeds, turning the soil and adding some of our home-made compost.
Cutting back and dividing plants is also on the list as is mowing the lawn, although Monty suggests leaving it long and raking out any dead leaves and moss. We are not planting potatoes this year but now is the time for chitting ready to plant as soon as it’s warm enough. Monty suggests outdoor planting of some crops but I feel it’s a little too cold considering the recent snow, so I think I will waiting a bit longer.
He does suggest undercover plantings of basil, courgettes, cucumbers, lettuces, peppers and tomatoes. With all of these things on my list I think a trip to the garden centre for some compost might be on my list of things to do this weekend.
