If this article is correct beer has recently been classified as an alcoholic drink in Russia. Until now it had been seen by many as a light refreshment rather than an alcoholic drink with hardened drinkers preferring vodka. It was considered a foodstuff along with other drinks under 10% in strength and could be brought like fruit juice or mineral water. Now it can no longer be sold in street outlets such as kiosks, railway stations, bus stops and petrol stations and there will be a ban on television advertising for beer. The new restrictions are part of an attempt to counter alcohol abuse.
